VISALIA, Calif (KFSN) -- A procession honoring a fallen law enforcement officer drew dozens of police vehicles and community members through Visalia as mourners gathered to pay their respects.

Dozens of law enforcement vehicles filled the parking lot at Salser and Dillard Funeral Chapel, where the procession began. The procession then traveled to Visalia First Assembly Church for the funeral service, accompanied by flashing red and blue lights, sirens, and a flyover overhead.

"It's family. This is definitely a family tragedy," said Audrey Wallace, a local resident who attended the procession.

Along the route, people stopped on sidewalks to watch as police led the procession through city streets.

"It's very somber. It's very sad. You realize when you see them wheel the casket out of the funeral home into the car," Wallace said. "He was a really brave officer who gave his life."

Dennis Smith, another community member attending the procession, said the experience was overwhelming.

"It's a really emotional thing, and you don't really get to see all of it because your eyes just fill with tears. "It's very emotional," Smith said.

Some of those paying their respects said they felt a personal connection through family members who had worked closely with Deputy Hoppert. One woman said her husband often spoke highly of the deputy.

"My husband talked about him that everybody loved Detective Hopper, that he was always on, always funny, always joking, always willing to help," she said.

Others who attended described themselves as strangers who nonetheless felt compelled to stop and show support for law enforcement and the fallen officer's family.

"We support what they do and understand the risks that are involved every day," Smith said.

Those gathered said they shared a common goal of honoring the deputy's service and ensuring his sacrifice is remembered.

"Well, because he paid the ultimate sacrifice. It's because of men and women like him in law enforcement who run to danger when other people are running away that we have a functional society, and his sacrifice can't be forgotten," Wallace said.

The procession and service brought together law enforcement officers and community members united in grief and remembrance.
