FDNY team takes command of Garnet Fire as containment nears 100%

FRESNO COUNTY, Calif. (KFSN) -- A New York City Fire Department incident management team will assume control of the Garnet Fire on Monday morning as crews work toward full containment of the 60,000-acre fire in Fresno County.

The FDNY team, led by incident commander Kyle Demasters, includes 29 members and five additional specialists with wildland firefighting experience.

They will oversee the final stages of the operation, which now focuses on repairing fire lines and restoring damaged forest land.

"There's still a lot of work to be done," Demasters said. "At this point, we're going in to repair all of the containment work that's been done."

The East Coast team has been shadowing the current command staff for several days to prepare for the transition.

Demasters acknowledged the challenges of working in the Sierra National Forest but said local crews have provided critical guidance.

"It's challenging terrain," he said. "There's a lot of complexity involved, but we got good information from the forest management officers and the people working here before we arrived."

The FDNY's involvement stems from a decades-old partnership that began after the September 11th attacks, when West Coast crews traveled to New York to assist in recovery efforts. Nearly 24 years later, Demasters said his team is returning the favor.

"We're out here helping people that helped us," he said. "It's about giving back to the community that supported us."

Recent rainfall has helped firefighters gain the upper hand, allowing for a reduction in personnel and equipment as containment approaches 100 percent, according to U.S. Forest Service officials.

The FDNY team plans to complete suppression repair and ensure a smooth handoff to local forest managers once the fire is fully contained.
