Jamie McKenzie, 31, has been booked into jail following the crash that killed Marvin Johnson Jr., according to police. Family members said detectives informed them of her arrest.
"It's a great feeling when the detective called us and told us that she was locked up. We felt relief, we felt joy, this was the first step," said Hazel Ashford, Johnson's mother.
Johnson Jr. was riding his motorcycle home from his job at Amazon when he was struck at the intersection of Fruit and Dakota, according to police. Investigators say McKenzie was driving a silver SUV and fled the scene, leaving Johnson in the roadway.
Johnson was taken to a hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
Family members returned to the crash site following news of McKenzie's arrest. While they said her surrender provided some comfort, they emphasized that it does not lessen their grief.
"I feel a little at ease because she's locked up, but it's not going to get any better, it won't," said Ashley Deloney, Johnson's aunt.
Daryl Johnson, the victim's wife, described her emotions in the aftermath of the loss.
"Just hurt, very hurt," she said.

Court records show McKenzie faces several charges, including felony hit-and-run and misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter. Johnson's relatives said they do not believe the charges adequately reflect the severity of the incident.
"We want justice, we want justice to the extreme. I want max sentence for her. She will not get away with this at all," Deloney said.
Action News also learned there was another passenger in the vehicle at the time of the crash. Police said that the person is cooperating with investigators.
In the wake of the crash, Johnson's family is calling for changes to the justice system, including additional cameras and tougher penalties in hit-and-run cases.
"I think you should get 24 hours to turn yourself in. After that, it should be murder," Ashford said.
Deloney added, "I feel like Fresno needs to do better when it comes to hit and runs and DUIs because it's been a lot of that going on and a lot of people are dying by those taking off I feel like that's murder to me."
The arrest comes as Johnson's family continues to grapple with his death and prepares for his funeral in the coming days.
Remembering her son, Ashford shared an emotional message.
"Mommy enjoyed every moment of you. Mommy loves you so much and I miss you so much."
Marvin's funeral is scheduled for July 31.
McKenzie is scheduled to be in court for her arraignment Thursday morning at 8:30 am.
