According to a report from the Mariposa Gazette, a Merced man claims he sold methamphetamine to McAfee on multiple occasions.
The explosive allegation comes shortly after McAfee's abrupt resignation, which followed a closed-door meeting by the Mariposa County Board of Supervisors last Monday.
The board cited "personnel matters" but did not disclose specifics.

In the wake of McAfee's departure, Walter Wall, who previously served as DA before becoming County Counsel, has been reappointed to the position.
"That was his decision to resign," said Jeanne Haegele of Mariposa County. "We worked with our labor council, Liebert Cassidy & Whitmore, and also coordinated with the Attorney General's office in California to ensure the process was handled properly and in full accordance with the law."
Legal Analyst C. Logan McKechnie says the allegations of illegal activity will have major implications for the cases McAfee has handled.
"How many cases are they now going to have to go back and review because his name is on it?" McKechnie said. "If he was under the influence when he decided to charge someone or someone or he was under the influence when he was in court, all of those cases probably need to be reviewed."
McAfee was appointed DA in January 2025, replacing Wall. He had previously served as a Deputy DA in Mariposa and practiced family law in Merced.
"I've known Mr. McAfee for a lot of years," McKechnie said. "He was formerly a Deputy DA in Mariposa, did family law here, went back as a deputy, and eventually became district attorney."
At this point, McAfee has not been charged with any crimes. However, investigations are underway.
"You have two things going here," McKechnie explained. "You have the professional responsibility, which is the responsibility of the state board of California, and you have the criminal law responsibility, which is now in the hands of the Attorney General. There could be two concurrent investigations happening."
Action News was able to reach McAfee on the phone, but he declined to comment at this time.
