FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- Authorities said Thong Vang, 37, of Fresno walked into the Fresno County Jail Saturday morning and shot Correctional Officers Juanita Davila and Toamalama Scanlan.

Sue Matuu was heading out of town to go on vacation when she got the call that her family member, Scanlan, had been shot.

"I was pissed," she said. "I was very pissed."

And she was frustrated while she tries to figure how this happened to someone who cared so much for others.

"It happened to one of the best guys with a bigger heart than anybody in this line of duty," Matuu said.

Scanlan was a veteran officer with 10 years of experience. He was working alongside another veteran, Davila, who had 18 years of experience when Vang opened fire on them, hitting them both in the head and neck areas.

Sue Matuu was heading out of town to go on vacation when she got the call that her family member, Toamalama Scanlan, had been shot.

"We are all praying for a full recovery and I ask the public to do the same," Fresno County Sheriff Margaret Mims said in a press conference.

Members of Davila's family said she is expected to pull through despite her serious injuries, but family members were still shaken up as they walked into Community Regional Medical Center.

Scanlan's aunt said their family is still shaken up as well and she tells us prayer is what's keeping them family together during this difficult time.

"Faith is holding us so strongly together and our faith is strong," Simoe Lualemaga said.

"His wife and kids are holding on and with family coming in tomorrow we will pull in," Matuu said. "And like any family, we'll pull through. We got this."

Scanlan's family said right now he's not responding to them but he's out of surgery and his vital signs are improving.
