FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- Students at Fresno's Steinbeck Elementary School are back in class following the sudden death of a 9-year-old classmate killed in a drive-by shooting.

Janessa Ramirez was killed Saturday night after she was hit by a stray bullet outside a West Central Fresno laundromat. Tuesday morning, students returned to class for the first time since Janessa's death. Administrators took extra steps to help students cope with the sudden loss, providing counselors for anyone who needed to talk.

One grandparent told Action News her grandson told her he knew Janessa, and that he is struggling with understanding what happened.

Fresno Police say Janessa was caught in the crossfire between two groups that began firing at each other. So far, the suspects have not been identified. Police are now offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to an arrest.
