Merced County landfill fire sends black smoke billowing into sky

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- Crews worked to put out a large trash fire at the Highway 59 Landfill in Merced County on Sunday.

The dump is located along the highway, about two miles north of Bellevue Road.

Action News viewer Debbie Morimoto snapped a photo of the scene, which showed a lot of black smoke billowing into the sky.

Cal Fire officials say the flames were not threatening any structures, but firefighters were trying to protect some tractors and other equipment.

There's no word yet on how the fire started.
