Leptospirosis vaccines available at Central California SPCA Small Animal Hospital

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- The Central California SPCA says there have been nine confirmed cases of dogs infected with leptospirosis in the Fresno area. Experts say the sick pets frequented the El Capitan and Woodward Park dog parks.

The disease -- also known as lepto -- is caused by infection with bacteria found in soil and water around the world. It's spread by coming into contact with the urine of an infected dog. Symptoms include fever, loss of appetite for several days and diarrhea.

There is a vaccine against lepto. The Central California SPCA Small Animal Hospital is making the shots available for $6 each starting Monday, July 13. To make an appointment, call (559) 237-1125.
