FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- Six Fresno County residents received honors on Friday at the annual African-American Heritage Awards.

Among those being recognized was 8-year-old Danay Ferguson. The third grader is the youngest person in Fresno County history to apply for and receive a business license. Danay's business is called Reading Heart, and she works to give donated books to the less fortunate and people in the hospital.

"Well, I wanted to start this because the kids in the hospital they get bored. But, when you give a book to them, they use their imagination and act like they're outside of the hospital," Danay said.

Assemblyman Henry T. Perea, D-Fresno, presented Danay with a special proclamation along with five other Valley residents who were recognized for their volunteerism and community advocacy.
