Some Fresno residents believe it's time to loosen the water restriction

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- The summer heat is taking its toll on Valley landscapes and lawns. Many people in Fresno believe it's time to loosen watering restrictions.

The wet winter led the state to drop drought restrictions and allow cities to set their own conservation standards. Fresno though hasn't budged on its two days a week watering schedule.

Every Fresno neighborhood features a mixture of both green turf and stressed lawns. Last month the city of Clovis added a third day of watering. Folks like Larry Gollmer would like to see Fresno do the same.

"I think a third day during maybe June to September would be nice, but we don't know what the winter's going to bring us in rainfall this year."

The City of Fresno allows those with odd addresses to water Tuesdays and Saturdays. Even addresses can water Wednesdays and Sundays. A third day won't be added.

"What we'd like to do is get a normal snowpack first. Once we get a normal snowpack then we can start talking about making adjustments. Right now the drought is still a living, breathing thing," said Tom Esqueda, Public Utilities Director.

Jim Campbell is among those in Fresno who said they can get by with just two days of watering. Campbell and his wife Loretta put in a drought-tolerant landscape a year and a half ago.

"If we can get used to water conservation for the past couple of years, why not extend it? Particularly since even if we do seem to have water available this year we really need to start recharging our aquifer."

Campbell said it's been proven people can conserve so they shouldn't stop.

Clovis and Tulare are the only Valley cities where you can water three days a week.
