Domestic Violence Awareness - Domestic violence impacts entire families. The Marjaree Mason Center is hosting a workshop on cultural competency with Dr. Valerie Batts, Founding Director and VP of Consulting for VISIONS, Inc. The Marjaree Mason Center is also hosting Marjaree's Mardi Gras Birthday Soiree.

Guest: Nicole Linder/Executive Director-Marjaree Mason Center

The Batts workshop training will benefit anyone who works with people, especially those who serve clients. Every day we work alongside people who are different from us.

Dr. Batts will help us look at cultural competency as more than just recognizing our different races, but rather recognizing how we are different from each other because of our upbringing, our beliefs, and all of our "identities" that shape who we are.

Over the course of the six-hour training, Dr. Batts will focus on helping people recognize their own biases, and then teach them how to embrace the differences in other people. We all have biases, this is completely normal! What we all need to work on, though, is identifying ways to acknowledge, accept, and OWN our biases. Once we can achieve that, we will be able to better serve those who are different from us.
