ANAHEIM, Calif. -- The Los Angeles Angels recalled third baseman Jefry Marte from Triple-A Salt Lake and put him in the starting lineup against Detroit on Tuesday night.
The Angels sent top prospect Kaleb Cowart back to the minors to make room for Marte.
Marte hit .381 in Salt Lake in the past 11 games after getting sent down from his first stint with the Angels.
Yunel Escobar was out of the Angels' lineup for the second straight day with a bruised left wrist, but manager Mike Scioscia said he might play Wednesday. Scioscia expects Marte to get more playing time even after Escobar's return, which means Marte might play first base as well.
Scioscia says left-hander C.J. Wilson had an MRI that showed no new problems beyond his persistent shoulder tendinitis.
