Braves designate Carlos Quentin for assignment

MIAMI -- The Atlanta Bravesdesignated two-time All-StarCarlos Quentinfor assignment less than a day after getting himin a big trade with the San Diego Padres.

The Braves also said Monday that right-hander Jason Grilli will be their new closer. He will replace All-Star Craig Kimbrel, who was traded to San Diego.

The move involving Quentin came hours before the Braves' season opener Monday at Miami. On Sunday, they traded Kimbrel and outfielder Melvin Upton Jr. in a deal that sent Quentin, outfielder Cameron Maybin, two minor leaguers and a draft pick to Atlanta.

Maybin was with the Braves on Monday, but he wasn't in the starting lineup.

Grilli has 50 career saves, including 33 with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2013.
