Chargers, San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer meet to discuss new stadium

SAN DIEGO -- Chargers chairman Dean Spanos and Mark Fabiani, the point person for the team on the stadium issue, met with San Diego mayor Kevin Faulconer, city attorney Jan Goldsmith and county supervisor Ron Roberts on Tuesday.

The meeting, which included the city's negotiating team, was the start of official negotiations toward the possible funding of a new stadium for the Chargers.

"Today we and our negotiating team met with Chargers chairman Dean Spanos and his adviser Mark Fabiani for more than an hour," Faulconer's spokesperson Craig Gustafson said in a prepared statement. "It was a productive discussion on a variety of issues, and both parties agreed to meet again within the next several days."

The mayor-appointed citizens' stadium advisory group two weeks ago presented a $1.1 billion finance proposal for a new stadium to house the Chargers at the Mission Valley site, the current home of Qualcomm Stadium.

However, both the Chargers and the NFL have indicated that the proposal does not meet the team's needs.

Also at issue is putting together a proposal that can get approval from local voters by the end of this year in order to meet the league's deadline, with the Chargers, the Oakland Raiders and the St. Louis Rams considering filing relocation applications in order to move to Los Angeles.

The Chargers are partnering with the Raiders on a $1.7 billion proposal to build an NFL stadium in Carson, California.

Rams owner Stan Kroenke announced plans in January to build a $1.8 billion, 80,000-seat stadium in Inglewood, California. Demolition crews imploded Hollywood Park on Sunday morning to make way for a new stadium.
