Darren Collison faces 2 charges in domestic violence incident

Sacramento Kings guard Darren Collison was charged Friday with two misdemeanor domestic violence counts related to an incident last month, the Placer County (California) District Attorney's Office announced.

Collison was charged with one count of domestic violence causing injury and one count of domestic battery of a spouse.

He faces up to a year in county jail if convicted and could face other conditions, such as participating in a one-year batterer's treatment program, the DA's office said in a news release.

He also was charged with one count of driving on a suspended license in relation to a separate incident.

Collison was arrested May 30 after deputies responded to a report of a woman being assaulted inside a Northern California home and found the woman visibly injured.

The DA's office said it reviewed the 911 call made by the woman and photographs of her injuries, among other evidence.

"The lack of any prior criminal history of Mr. Collision and the fact the injuries suffered by the [accuser], while concerning, required little if any medical attention, dictate this case be charged as a misdemeanor," officials said in the news release.

The DA's office also said it has refused requests from Collison's representatives and the NBA to discuss the case.

"While the facts of the case will ultimately become available throughout the court process, our office has an obligation to assure Mr. Collision receives a fair trial by not revealing details of the case outside of the court process. Accordingly, any request for evidence or information regarding the case from anyone except the court and Mr. Collision's counsel of record will be denied," officials said.

Officials have not released the name of the woman or any other details.

Collison was released on $55,000 bail hours after his arrest and is due back in court for his arraignment July 11.

The Kings issued a brief statement at the time of Collison's arrest.

"The Sacramento Kings condemn violence of any kind," the team said. "We are gathering additional information and once all facts are known we will take appropriate steps."

Collison appeared in 74 games for the Kings last season, averaging 14 points and 4.3 assists. He signed a three-year, $16 million deal with the Kings before the 2014-15 season, but he missed the final 33 games with a core muscle injury that required surgery.

Collison previously played for New Orleans, Indiana, Dallas and the Los Angeles Clippers during his seven-year NBA career.
