Hyun-Jin Ryu, manager Dave Roberts pessimistic after starter strains groin

PHOENIX -- The Los Angeles Dodgers could be without left-hander Hyun-Jin Ryu, their top starting pitcher so far this season, for a while after he strained his left groin Wednesday night in their 2-1 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Ryu left the game in the bottom of the second inning after recording an out, following a visit to the mound by manager Dave Roberts and a trainer to check on him.

The left-hander didn't try to throw a pitch afterward, and he stretched his legs before walking off the mound to the dugout. He lasted 1 innings and struck out two with a walk, allowing one hit.

"It doesn't feel good. It was the last pitch that probably got me," Ryu said through an interpreter after the game. "It seems to be worse than the one that I had in the past."

Ryu said he hurt his groin two years ago. He will get a scan Thursday to determine the severity of the injury.

The Dodgers led 1-0 when Ryu left. He was relieved by right-hander Pedro Baez.

Ryu entered the game 3-0 with a 2.22 ERA. He has been the struggling Dodgers' most consistent starter this season.

"Just by the talk from the training staff, it's a pretty good one," Roberts said, meaning that the prognosis doesn't seem promising. "Just the way he responded, he has some history with the left groin.

"He was off to such a great start. I know he's disappointed, obviously. It's a big loss."
