SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Longtime San Jose Sharks executive Wayne Thomas is retiring after 22 years in the organization.

The 67-year-old Thomas announced his decision to step down as vice president and assistant general manager on Thursday. He says he wants to spend more time with his family.

Thomas spent 45 years in hockey as a player, coach, scout and executive. He played goalie for nine years in the NHL for Montreal, Toronto and the New York Rangers. The Canadiens won the Stanley Cup his rookie year in 1972-73.

Thomas worked closely with the goalies in San Jose, as well as various other duties.

Thomas says his only regret is not being able to bring a Stanley Cup championship to San Jose.
