The Miami Marlins acquired reliever Fernando Rodney from San Diegofor right-handed pitcher Chris Paddack, Padres general manager A.J. Preller announced Thursday.

Rodney, 39, has an 0.31 ERA and 17 saves in 28 appearances with the Padres this season. He has 253 career saves, the bulk of them coming with the Tampa Bay Rays, Detroit Tigers and Seattle Mariners.

The Marlins, at 41-37, currently have possession of the National League's second wild-card spot. Rodney adds depth to a bullpen that's 14-15 with a 3.78 ERA, sixth best in the National League. A.J. Ramos, Miami's closer, has 24 saves and a 1.74 ERA this season.

Paddack, 20, is a Class A prospect with a 2-0 record and a 0.95 ERA pitching for Single-A Greensboro. The right-handed pitcher has worked at least five innings without a hit in his last three starts.
