The San Diego Padres announced Monday that they've agreed to terms on a deal with Cuban right-handed pitcher Michel Baez.

Word of a deal between the two sides surfaced on Dec. 12, with MLB.com reporting that Baez will receive a $3 million bonus. The Padres are already over their allotted bonus pool for the 2016-17 international signing period, so they will incur a 100 percent luxury tax on the $3 million.

Baez, 20, pitched in Cuba's top professional league, Serie Nacional, for both Mayabeque and Pinar del Rio in 2014 as an 18-year-old. He posted a 5.22 ERA in 16 games, striking out 17 and walking 17 in 29innings.

According to the Padres' news release, the 6-foot-8 prospect spent the past year fine-tuning his mechanics and delivery and is from the same hometown (Mayabeque) as recent San Diego signees Adrian Morejon and Ronald Bolanos.
