The San Diego Padres selected Stanford right-hander Cal Quantrill with the No. 8 pick in Thursday night's MLB first-year player draft.
Scouting report:Quantrill might be among those considered for the top overall selection had he not required Tommy John surgery in March 2015. He began to throw during the offseason and began to work his secondary pitches back into the fold off of flat ground in March. He has yet to see game action this spring.
