The San Diego Padres selected shortstop Hudson Sanchez of Southlake (Texas) Carroll HS with the No. 24 pick in Thursday night's MLB first-year player draft. They also selected Kent State left-hander Erik Lauer with the No. 25 pick.
Sanchez scouting report: Sanchez has a projectable 6-foot-3 frame and should grow into some power as he matures, which will help counterbalance a move away from shortstop. Sanchez's actions are solid, his hands soft and his footwork unpolished but athletic and he has an above-average arm. He could be an above-average to plus defender at third base. Lauer scouting report: He'll sit 89-92 and touch 94 on occasion with a very easy delivery. The fastball is complemented by a bevy of secondary pitches, the best of which is a mid-80s slider with short but late movement. Read full report here (Insider)
