Authorities have identified the man who they say shot and killed a Mormon church official in Visalia before dying in a shootout with police.

Visalia police say 47-year-old Kenneth James Ward of Modesto walked into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints between Sunday services and asked for the leader of the congregation. Ward was directed to 40-year-old Clay Sannar, and he allegedly opened fire on the lay bishop.

Police say Ward later called police to tell them that he was the shooter and where they could find him. They say Ward fired shots at responding officers, prompting them to return fire. He was died at a local hospital.

Investigators say they still don't have a motive for the church shooting.
