United Way hosts Day of Action in Fresno
Dozens of people spent their Saturday helping families in need in our community.

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- Dozens of people spent their Saturday helping families in need in our community.

The United Way of Fresno County hosted its annual Day of Action today -- handing out food and other resources to people in need. About 250 families took home free groceries.

Others received discounted cell phones and haircuts.

The nonprofit also passed out ten thousand donated books to Valley children. Organizers say having a book to read at home can make the difference in their education. "Having a book at their house really encourages them and many of our children don't have any books at home and without this event, they wouldn't have an opportunity to have a book," said Sue Smilie Janecek.

The United Way collects books to hand out all year long. They will now begin accepting donations to pass out at the next day of action.

ABC30 was a proud sponsor of this event.
