CLOVIS, Calif. (KFSN) -- The Clovis Veterans Memorial District continued a decades-long tradition of honoring fallen service members with a Memorial Day event that draws hundreds from the community each year.
Chairman Tom Wright said the annual gathering holds deep personal meaning, especially as it connects families and veterans who share similar experiences.
"I have two grandsons who just finished their active duty with the army and it just makes a special bond between people who understand what that means," Wright said.
For many in attendance, Memorial Day is a time of reflection and remembrance. Master Sergeant Jay Smith, who has served in the Army for 27 years, said the observance carries a personal significance rooted in loss.
"My brother, he is navy way back in the Vietnam era, he is not with us no more, but this is near and dear, and when you hear taps, it does something to you internally, that's what's being me out," Smith said.
Smith emphasized the importance of recognizing the sacrifices made by service members.
"We have a lot of people who have sacrificed their lives for us to be where we are today," he said.
While the day is marked by solemn remembrance, the event also offers an opportunity for the community to come together in support and gratitude through gestures as simple as a hug, a smile, or a dance.
"It's just a chance for the community to come together and say thank you and remember the veterans have given their lives and service to their country," Wright said.
