Good Sports: A new era for Fresno City College football

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- The Rams are off and running into the 2026 season.

For the first time in 27 years, a new coach leads them out onto the field.

Head coach Josh Brown takes over for longtime FCC head coach Tony Caviglia after the Rams Hall of Famer retired last season.

"When it first opened up, the first guy I called was Coach C and said, 'You think I should go for it?' and he said, 'Yeah, absolutely.'"

Brown is stepping in to fill the void of a legend at Fresno City College.

It's his first head coaching gig in over 20 years of coaching experience after stops at UTEP, Cal Poly and Morehead State.

"I've recruited this school for over 20 years as a Division I coach, so I always knew this is a good spot," he said.

He's bringing that experience to the JUCO level, where Brown's focus has always been clear.

"I was a junior college product myself," he said. "I truly believe that I can change these guys' lives though, and that's the main focus of our culture."

The Rams opened up the season two weeks ago against Sierra on the road, and while the start was less than ideal, a tush push for the win with eight seconds left sure made for a fun bus ride home.

"We were down 8-0 with 14:30 left in the first quarter, so I had some thoughts where I was like, maybe this head coaching isn't for me," he said.

"Everyone was all happy," says quarterback Christian English. "We were hyped on the bus. It just shows we have no quit, and we're willing to do whatever it takes to win the deal."

The Rams doubled that win total with a 24-10 win in the home opener on Saturday, as Brown and the Rams push for a title in his first season.

"We want to win, and I think he, obviously, wants to win, too," English said. "I think our main goal is just to be champions and be the best we could be."
