SCCCD partners with Ed2go to offer online courses for professional growth and development

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- As the job market gets more competitive, The Training Institute through State Center Community College District is making it easy for students to advance their skills and learn new ones.

Frank Nuñez is the District Director Trade and Training.

"The Training Institute is the not for credit, arm of State Center Community College District, and so we do a lot of short term programs, a lot of professional development," Nuñez said.

While they offer on-site training such as truck driving certification and careers in the medical profession, they also have a partnership with Ed2go.

It's an online open enrollment program made for anyone, but especially for working professionals.

"They need to be able to do it at their own pace or they can't go to college during the regular day, so they want to do it in the evenings or on the weekends, when they have more time to dedicate to their studies," Nuñez said.

Ed2Go has more than 750 online courses in over 40 specialty industries.

There are also certification courses. They are no credit and vary in cost.

"It's personal, professional development, which are short-term programs, and it's also career advancement or career development programs, which are longer term," Nuñez said.

Personal and professional development focuses on soft skills training and is typically one subject.

It includes courses such as business and marketing writing or computer skills for the workplace.

Meanwhile, career development programs include medical billing and coding or a certified paralegal.

Some courses are self-guided and can be completed at your own pace.

Others are instructor-led with weekly benchmarks.

Nuñez says you don't have to be a student within the SCCCD to take advantage of these courses.

"Anybody that's an adult that wants a fast track to get their career started, or they want to get some additional classes under them so that they can advance in their current career -- those are the kind of folks I'd recommend," Nuñez said.

Financing is available for the Ed2Go courses.
