Travelers look at electric vehicles to save on summer road trips

In our series, Driving Into the Future sponsored by Electric for All, we take a look at how electric vehicles could help summer travelers.

Summertime is prime time to take a road trip.

But the thought of a road trip might be daunting, especially with the high cost of gas.

For that reason, some people are looking into alternatives like electric vehicles (EVs).

"With gas prices being so high, an EV just makes common sense, because it's cheaper to drive an EV than to drive a gas counterpart," says Josh Boone, Executive Director at Veloz.

According to electricforall.org, EV drivers can save more than $2,000 a year on gas alone, adding up to about $166 saved each month.

"EVs have become more popular as batteries have improved, ranges have improved," says Tess Kraiker, campus president at Universal Technical Institute. "The infrastructure to charge has improved, which all makes that more marketable."

It has also become easier to take EVs on longer drives.

"Taking EVs on a road trip first and foremost is fun, but also taking EVs on a road trip is fantastic because, first of all, you don't have to buy gas," Boone explained. "But like with any road trip in a gas car, you have to stop and go to the restroom or get a snack. In an EV, you take those opportunities to charge while you're doing those other things."

For many drivers, range anxiety is now a thing of the past.

"With the modern, new electric vehicles that get over 300 miles of range, we have range confidence as the charging network is growing," Boone said. "So when you're on a long road trip or running around town, you want to know where to charge. There are really three places: you can go into your EV and look on the screen to identify charging locations, you can go onto your EV's mobile app to find charging stations, or you can go onto electricforall.org and do some pre-trip planning to identify where you want stop over the course of your trip."

Public charging is increasingly available at convenient locations like grocery stores, retail centers, parking garages and libraries.

"As the charging providers are building out the network and the automakers are delivering new vehicles, charging times are going down," Boone said. "So it's making it even more convenient, saving you time and money."
