Watching Your Wallet: Sustainable habits to help save money

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- From thrifting and clothing swaps to fix-it clinics and gardening, going green can ultimately help you save green.

"I think it's all about slowing down and being more conscientious of the way we consume, and how we use things versus just using them in the moment and letting them go," says UC Merced Financial Wellness Program Founder and Manager, Charah Coleman.

Coleman says there's a strong parallel between sustainability and saving money.

"We're recognizing that there's a big throwaway culture, there's a fast fashion culture and we're seeing an uptick in folks that go out and purchase at the thrift store, or even go to bartering," she said.

Clothing swaps are growing in popularity in the Central Valley.

"You basically exchange clothing," Coleman said. "It can be in season, out of season, but how many times have you purchased something for a specific event and you think you're going to wear it again, and you don't," Coleman said.

Sprucing up your wardrobe at little to no cost while building community.

Consider repairing an item before tossing it in the trash. Fix-it clinics bring together volunteers with a variety of specialties.

"Just various things from being a seamstress to maybe just knowing how to fix a bicycle," Coleman said.

Don't have a green thumb? Meal planning goes a long way toward reducing your grocery costs.

"Your daily habits, the daily decisions that you make can make a huge impact in the long run," Coleman said.

You can also shop on grocery store apps to avoid any impulse buys you may cave to while in store.
