FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- For the first time since the economic downturn the city of Fresno is looking to hire firefighters.

During the economic downturn Fresno Fire cut about 70 positions to save money. Chief Kerri Donnis says the downsizing causes a problem during multiple emergencies.

"The issue isn't the first fire. It's the second fire that happens simultaneously or within the time they are responding to the first fire, that response to the second or third call is a delayed response and that's where the rub comes," said Donnis.

Donnis is looking to fill about 12 positions with experienced firefighters from other cities. A federal grant will fund the new crews for two years but the city is then in charge of paying them.

"We need to rebuild this department and everyone in the city administration understands so I am confident they will continue their employment," added Donnis.

Chief Donnis says eligible candidates will have at least two years of experience working as a firefighter in another city.

There are also other positions available citywide including in public works and the police force.

"We do have general fund resources which are improving so yes the budget is improving to a certain degree which allows us to incrementally restore service," said Jeff Cardell.
