Man sentenced to 11 years in prison in death of unhoused Fresno man
FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- Two men with the same last name plead no contest in separate Fresno County cases, prompting a correction to a story Action News aired on Wednesday.
Francisco Mondragon pleaded no contest and was sentenced Wednesday morning to 11 years in prison. He was accused of shooting and killing 49-year-old Ray Stewart in East Central Fresno in 2021.
Authorities said the homicide occurred at a homeless encampment near Harvey and Winery avenues.
In a separate case previously covered by Action News, Adrian Mondragon was charged with battery causing serious bodily injury for punching a man in 2024. He ultimately pleaded no contest.
According to officials, Adrian Mondragon punched 52-year-old John Chandler in the face because he was owed $40. Chandler was taken to a hospital and died two days later from his injuries.
Investigators said Chandler was unhoused and living at Bicentennial Park near Sunnyside and Sierra avenues in Clovis at the time of the crime.
Adrian Mondragon served his sentence and was released from custody earlier this year.
The two cases involved different defendants and separate incidents, despite the shared last name.
