FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- When kids return to the lunch line on Monday, they won't see flavored milks, sugary cookies and greasy pizza. Federal initiatives have replaced the foods readily available at school with healthier options.

Fresno Unified is the largest school district in the Valley, and Monday marks a historic day for the district. Gaston Middle School in Southwest Fresno opens its doors to students for the first time.

The Southwest Fresno community has been without a middle school for nearly 35 years, but Monday that changes when students head to class at a state-of-the-art building. The new school showcases a modern two-story building, featuring a foyer entrance, a 36-classroom academic wing, short throw projectors, environmentally friendly polished concrete floors, and career technology education classrooms. Unique to any other middle school in the district, Gaston's career technology education rooms provide roll up doors providing both indoor and outdoor learning opportunities and student conference rooms promoting collaboration. Additionally, students have a multipurpose room with choral and orchestra band rooms, a food court style cafeteria and a shaded exterior amphitheater.

Gaston students will participate in a rigorous curriculum of career and project based learning opportunities in science, technology, engineering and math.

About 500 students will be attending class at Gaston Middle School.

School buses hit the road for Fresno Unified. It's the first day of school for nearly 72,000 students at Fresno Unified, and that means dozens of school buses are hitting the road to get them to school safely.
