Juneteenth kicks off in Fresno with flag-raising ceremony and weekend events

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- A flag-raising ceremony at Fresno City Hall kicked off Juneteenth.

Dozens filled the plaza in Downtown Fresno on Friday afternoon.

The federal holiday marks the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in 1865.

"Our community has made great contributions to the success of this country," expresses Pastor BT Lewis.

He continues, "400 years of slavery symbolized 400 years of building an agricultural system on the backs of people they took from another country."

Embracing freedom, while honoring liberty and access to opportunity in this country, is how Pastor Lewis describes Juneteenth.

He hopes events like this can help encourage the next generation of leaders...

"It's important for every diverse community in our city and our nation that we never forget where we came from. You want your children to know the history of your families, the history of your ancestors, and we want the same, because it helps them build self-esteem," explains Pastor Lewis.

For locals, this weekend means remembering their roots.

"All of this is worth it, it's all worth it, for a good cause, and to continue to fight for we have a lot to overcome," expresses attendee, Hester Hensley.

The next generation says they plan to continue honoring diverse local communities.

"I hope there is always joy in the new accomplishments in the African American community, and the freedom they are now able to experience and I hope that continues to be celebrated so that it continues to improve," mentions another attendee, Verona Hampton.

The three-day event, "Freedom Town," kicks off this afternoon at Les Kimber Park.

People can swing by until 9 tonight to enjoy local music, food, vendors and family-friendly entertainment.

The weekend festivities will continue on Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m to 8 p.m.
