Support continues to pour in from the community for the correctional officers critically hurt while working at the Fresno County jail earlier this month.

Fresno police officers and firefighters spent hours Thursday flipping burgers and turning hot dogs. Their unions paid for the food and fixings and for a $5 donation hundreds lined up to eat and help the cause.

"It's a better turnout than we expected. We just thought we'd do something small and it turned out to be fairly big already," said Damon Kurtz, Fresno Police Officer's Association.

More than 700 lunches were purchased and many in line were law enforcement officers or those who work downtown. It took some most of their entire lunch break to make it to the front, but that didn't matter.

"We are like a family and we support each other and that includes businesses close by. It includes the county jail, so we're here, and this is amazing that so many people are here to support this cause," said Itzi Robles, works at City Hall.

District Attorney Lisa Smittcamp saw the injured officers families Wednesday and spent some time briefly with Juanita Davila.

"Her jaw is wired shut so it's difficult for her to speak and she looks absolutely beautiful. If you walked past her you wouldn't know she was injured."

Several City Council Members helped serve the lunches, including Council President Paul Caprioglio who had the idea of continuing to show support by hosting the BBQ.

Officer Scanlan remains in critical condition at Community Regional Medical Center. He has been fighting off pneumonia and remains sedated.

So far in all around $60,000 has been raised. Both families said they are grateful for the support and love during this time.
