FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- Two people are in the hospital following a failed carjacking in Southeast Fresno.

The incident happened a little before 10 p.m. Sunday night in the area of Butler and Winery.

Authorities said three suspects got into a physical altercation with a 36-year-old man. The fight escalated when the suspects knocked out the victim, and took away the keys to a car.

Police said when the suspects tried to drive off, a woman jumped through the open sunroof to stop the suspects. At the same time, a 56-year-old woman was hit by the front of the car -- causing her to fall and hit her head on the asphalt. Police said they do not know if the woman was trying to block the car, or was standing in the roadway when she was hit.

The suspects then abandoned the their carjacking attempt and fled the scene in a small black SUV with tinted windows.

The 56-year-old woman was taken to Community Regional Medical Center (CRMC) with a skull fracture -- she is listed in critical condition. The 36-year-old man was also taken to CRMC and is listed in stable condition.

Police are still searching for the three suspects. All three victims are members of the same family.

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call the Fresno Police Department.
