Elderly woman dies after Calwa shooting in early January

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- An elderly woman has died after being shot in Calwa two weeks ago. Maria Soccoro Lopez, 77, is Fresno County's sixth homicide in just the first month of the year.

Socorro Lopez and her 52-year-old son, Jesus Castor, were walking to the store in Calwa, on January 11th, when someone opened fire. Castor died immediately but Socorro has been on life support since the shooting. She died Tuesday morning.

The shooting happened just before two in the morning as the mother and son, and an 18-year old niece, were walking to the store. A group of men approached them, one man reportedly pulled out a gun and fired multiple shots at castor and his mother. The 18-year old niece was not hurt and ran to a nearby home and told the residents to call 9-1-1.

Fresno County sheriff's detectives need help from the public to help solve this case. "There's really been no solid leads so far for us to make an arrest, so more than ever, it's really important to get the community to participate and give us good information so we can solve these and deliver some closure to the families of the victims," said Tony Botti, Fresno County Sheriff's Department.

The reward money in the Calwa case has increased from $1,000 to $2,500.

It's been a tough month for Fresno county sheriff's detectives, they are working six homicide cases since the first of the year-- all them unsolved.
