Merced fires that damaged vehicles, apartments ruled arson
Firefighters in Merced are investigating three separate arsons.

MERCED, Calif. (KFSN) -- Firefighters in the North Valley are investigating three separate arsons. All three happened in Merced early Wednesday morning.

The first fire damaged two vehicles at 9th and Canal streets before 3:30 a.m. Crews were able to put out the flames before they spread to a nearby home.

The second fire was reported just eight minutes later at 8th and S streets. Investigators say a van caught fire, and the flames spread to an apartment building before crews were able to get the fire under control. Three apartments were damaged. A total of 14 people, including six children, were displaced.

About an hour later, another vehicle fire was reported at an apartment complex at Canal and 9th streets. Authorities say two SUVs were damaged by fire. They say the vehicles' owners were about to head to work and were able to put out the flames.

Investigators are trying to figure out if these arson cases are related. The motive is not known.
