Derek Carr talks about time at Raiders training camp
Derek Carr says he's learning every day from the coaches and veterans and is at the Oakland Raiders training camp to serve the team, not himself.

NAPA, Calif. (KFSN) -- Former Fresno State quarterback Derek Carr took the field with the Oakland Raiders at the fourth day of training camp in Napa.

Carr is used to wearing a red jersey from his days at Fresno State, but now he's quickly adjusting to playing for the silver and black. The rookie quarterback looked comfortable on the practice field Monday, taking snaps and completing passes in front of a dedicated group of season ticket holders, including many from the Valley.

"I've been following him since I was in college," said Jose Verduzco of Visalia. "We both went to Fresno State, so it's a dream come true, Bulldog to Raider."

The coaching staff has made it clear that Matt Schaub is their starting quarterback for now. But many analysts and fans believe Carr could change their minds. He's been earning praise for his accuracy, intelligence and work ethic throughout the off-season.

"He's got poise, he's got arm strength, and I think he's a good fit out here," said Jaime Tarin of Modesto.

Carr also has the advantage of big brother David as a mentor and playing close to home. His family has been in Napa to support him, along with the rest of the Raider Nation and the Red Wave.

"I've always held season tickets to both teams, so I couldn't believe it when he was drafted to the Raiders; I was so excited," said Luis Morales of Visalia.

Carr is staying humble. He says he's learning every day from the coaches and veterans and is there to serve the team, not himself. He just wants to continue improving. He said he's been picking Charles Woodson's brain every day. He also told Action News how great it is to see so many Fresno State fans now supporting him there.

"It means a lot obviously, being in Oakland now, this is a perfect spot," said Carr. "All the Fresno fans are so close, two hours away, here in Napa three hours. It's so cool to have that support right here so close. And hopefully we can go get some wins and make it a little bit better."

Carr took some time to sign autographs for the fans right after practice.

Training camp is a little shorter this year, just 13 days of practice. The first pre-season game is coming up August 8 in Minnesota.
