Two arrested in fatal Fresno hit-run

Police say 33-year-old Curtis Travis and 22-year-old Stephen Stowers were in a stolen car when they ran a red light and crashed into Heliodoro Ruvalcaba back on January 5th. The 50-year-old grandfather was killed instantly.

The suspects were in court for their arraignment Wednesday. They face multiple charges, including murder. Police credit an anonymous tipster, as well as DNA evidence for the arrests.

Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer offered his condolences Wednesday, to the family of Heliodoro Ruvalcaba

Chief Jerry Dyer said, "We are sorry, deeply sorry for the loss and we're hopeful that what we've been able to do will give you some form of justice."

The 50-year-old grandfather was killed January 5th in at the intersection of Ashlan and Golden State in Central Fresno.

Investigators say Curtis Travis, and Stephen Stowers were driving a stolen car when they ran a red light going 60 miles per hour, and slammed into Ruvulcaba.

Police say just minutes before the crash, the suspects were involved in a home invasion robbery.

Family members are still struggling with the loss.

Sabrina Gray said, "These are you know a couple of people who left a scene. They left a man dead there, and the reality of it is, is that he will never come back. We will never have him back."

Eight days after the crash, police caught up with Travis when someone called in with a tip. But, a lack of evidence prohibited them from seeking charges.

A week later, they evidence they needed came from the Department of Justice who had just finished processing DNA evidence taken from the truck. That led police to Stowers.

Police say the two suspects both have long rap sheets, and are affiliated with gangs.

Ruvulcaba's wife says she's grateful to the police and the public, who never gave up looking for the men responsible for her husband's death.

"They have been so thoughtful. Considerate and thankful for them. Thanking them from the bottom of my heart. I appreciate it so much."

The murder charge stems from the fact the crash happened while the suspects were trying to leave the scene of a home invasion robbery, which is a felony offense.
