Police say the 20-year-old suspect was caring for her cousin's 2-year-old toddler. Shortly after the child was offered for sale, the sheriff's office received several calls from eBay users around the country, including a call from a woman in southeast Michigan who made the high bid and wanted police to investigate.
The suspect's neighbor, James Sanford, says the incident "seems more like a joke type thing, someone trying to sell their soul, their right leg or, you know, stuff like that. It's just a joke.
Investigators say it's unlikely she planned to actually sell the child, but instead was simply seeking money. The child is now back with her mother.
