GRIFFIN, GA -- A police officer ran into a burning home to save a three-year-old child.
Sgt. Joe Hudson told WGCL-TV he didn't think twice when he found out a little boy was still inside a smoke-filled home. He said the child's grandmother got out, but she wasn't able to save the boy who was trapped in a back bedroom.
"I am a father, and there is a child in the back bedroom and I need to get to him," Hudson said when asked what ran through his mind first. "I could see the smoke was already starting to get thick in the house and I could hear the fire cracking in the kitchen."
It took Hudson about a minute to find the little boy.

"I got frantic at one point because I could not find him. I thought he would be hiding. I was fixing to look under the bed when she told me about the back room," Hudson said. "I could see, until I got to that back bedroom where it was really thick, almost impossible to breathe. I was struggling to breathe. I opened the door and saw him. I grabbed him. He didn't have a chance to say anything."
Both Hudson and the little boy made it out of the house safely.
"She (grandma) did give me a hug and kiss on the cheek," Hudson said. "That made me feel good. That makes it all worth it. Doing this job when you have something like this happen, there is so much negativity out here, it felt good that day. I felt good when I went home."
According to WGCL-TV, both the child and grandmother have moved out of the rental home temporarily while it undergoes repairs.
