Oscars 2025 recap: Highlights and biggest moments from 97th Academy Awards

Paul Tazewell won the Oscar for best costume design for "Wicked."

"Wicked" wins the Oscar for Best Costume Design at the 2025 Academy Awards.

"This is absolutely astounding," Tazewell said, accepting the trophy.

Tazewell called the win a "very significant honor," noting that he is the first Black man to win in the category.

"I'm so proud of this," he said.

Actors from the films the nominees worked on presented the category, including Lily-Rose Depp, Elle Fanning, John Lithgow, Connie Nielsen and Bowen Yang.

Other nominees in the category included Arianne Phillips for "A Complete Unknown," Lisy Christl for "Conclave," Janty Yates and Dave Crossman for "Gladiator II," and Linda Muir for "Nosferatu."

Andrew Garfield took to the stage to hand out the Oscar for best animated feature film and best animated short film with Goldie Hawn -- and he didn't pass up the opportunity pass to tell the actress what she meant to his late mother.

"There's someone, there's a person who gave my mother during her life the most joy, the most comfort. And tonight, I feel very lucky, because I get to thank that person from the bottom of my heart. That person is Goldie Hawn," Garfield said. "I can feel her smiling at us at this moment."

Hawn replied, "Thank you, sweetie. That really touches me."

Garfield continued, "You've given us movies full of joy, you've lifted our spirits and you've made us feel that all's right with the world over and over and over again."

"I just loved it," Hawn said in response. "I was so lucky making movies in this amazing Hollywood and making people laugh -- and maybe some didn't, but that's OK."

Garfield's mother died in 2019 from pancreatic cancer.

Iranian filmmakers Shirin Sohani and Hossein Molayemi won their first Academy Award for "In the Shadow of the Cypress."

It was the second Iranian animated or live-action short film nominated at the Oscars and the first to win.

Animation is often thought of as childlike, fun and creative in nature, but it can also elicit deep emotion: "In the Shadow of the Cypress" takes a creative and artistic approach to the relationship between a father, an old former captain who is dealing with PTSD, and his daughter. The short also won best animated short at the Los Angeles Shorts International Film Festival.

Other films nominated in the category included "Beautiful Men," "Magic Candies," "Wander to Wonder" and "Yuck!"
