Garnet Fire spreads to McKinley Grove of Giant Sequoias

Fresno County's Garnet Fire has now reached the McKinley Grove of Giant Sequoias in the Sierra National Forest.
The U.S. Forest Service says the flames made a large run to the northwest as they pushed across Dinkey Creek and ran uphill toward Oak Flat, Ross Crossing and McKinley Grove Road.
Officials released video showing "low-intensity fire" with the iconic grove.
They say preparations had been made well in advance of this event, and firefighters had a installed sprinkler system that's been running 24 hours a day.
Crews also removed heavy brush build up from the base of the trees and out of the area.
The Forest Service says embers from the advancing fire front did get lodged in some of the branches of several trees, and crews remained in place to defend the grove until it was unsafe to do so.
Smokejumpers have now been called in and will attempt to climb the trees to extinguish the embers.
For now, there is no crown fire within the grove and no trees fully on fire.
The Garnet Fire has burned more than 54,900 acres since sparking on August 24. It is 14 percent contained.
