42-year-old Visalia man arrested for attempted murder following stabbing
VISALIA, Calif. (KFSN) -- A Visalia man is behind bars today after being arrested for attempted murder.
42-year-old Ian Young is behind bars and booked on a charge of attempted murder.
Visalia Police say he is the suspect in a stabbing that happened around 11 p.m. last Friday.
"Officers learned that the victim had been in a verbal argument with a male. During that argument, it escalated into a physical altercation. During that fight, the suspect pulled out a knife and stabbed the victim," says Visalia Police Department Public Information Officer Liz Jones.
The victim was rushed to Kaweah Health before officers arrived. He's now recovering.
Officers arrested Young in Coalinga on Thursday. He was then booked into the Tulare County jail.
Action News Legal Analyst, Tony Capozzi, says attempted murder charges could carry a minimum of seven years to life, if found guilty.
"But if he's convicted of first-degree... attempted first-degree murder, the sentence is life imprisonment with the possibility of parole. Now, that may seem pretty severe, but what that means is that after 7 years, he will be entitled to a parole hearing."
Despite the recent Downtown violence last Friday and the Saturday brawl involving about 100 people, locals say the area is typically safe.
"This is an isolated incident. This is a great part of Downtown Visalia to be at," local business owner Sharice Andrew said. "I am a member of the Art Consortium, we have our first Fridays here. I am here once a month at night, and it is a great place to be."
The Visalia Police Department says they also increased police presence downtown over the weekend. It's working on finalizing the investigation and submitting it to the DA's office.
Young is expected to be in court on Monday, August 31.
