Doctors urge vaccinations ahead of respiratory virus season

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- Central California healthcare workers are preparing for another busy respiratory virus season as fall approaches.

Doctors at the Modern Medicine Group in northeast Fresno say they're especially concerned about COVID-19, influenza and RSV as kids return to school and germs spread more easily.

"Especially since September is now here, October, November, a lot of the kids are back to school, so a lot of pathogens and germs are being passed around and those germs are coming home," said Dr. Harman Virk, an internal medicine physician and medical director at the Modern Medicine Group.

The clinic treats many patients over 60 and is closely monitoring those at higher risk for severe illness.

Last week, the FDA approved updated COVID-19 vaccine guidelines. Under the new recommendations, people 65 and older - and younger adults with underlying health conditions - qualify for the latest shot. Federal health officials say the vaccines remain available for anyone who wants them after consulting with their doctor.

"We're worried about all three, but what we're seeing right now is mainly COVID," Virk said. "But we're really worried about all three and trying to prevent all three."

Health experts recommend getting a flu shot between now and October. RSV vaccines are also available for babies and older adults at risk of severe illness.

Prevention goes beyond vaccines, Virk said. Healthy habits can make a difference.

"Getting a good six to seven hours of rest a night, staying hydrated and making sure you're exercising," he said.

CDC data shows COVID-19 cases have risen slightly but remain lower than last year.
