Dorm move-in day at Fresno State, including new housing project
FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- Thursday morning was a busy one at Fresno State as nearly 1,600 students and their loved ones lined up to get their room key.
Theo Sherry showed up with her mom, Janene, and checked out her new home for the next year.
Theo is one of the few freshmen who get to live in the brand-new apartment-style student housing.
The new building offers two-bedroom units with full kitchens.
For the first time, the university is accommodating six parent scholars who get to live with their children.
Theo says she's excited for her new journey studying ASL, a topic near and dear.
"I was born hard of hearing. I am deaf in one ear. I always just wanted to follow the field I was born into," said Theo Sherry.
Her new journey is not only exciting for her but also for her mother.
"Just knowing that she is safe, she has people who love her and care about her as much as I do is everything," said Janene Sherry.
Other students, including McKenna, who is also a freshman studying biology, moved into a dorm with help from her parents.
"Excited, lots of emotion. I am sad that she is not going to be home, but I am super excited for her to branch her wings and move on with the next chapter of her life," said Shannon Wilkinson.
The Director of Housing, Erin Boele, says that while this day never gets old, she loves that there are now more living options for students.
When it comes to cost, the apartment's choice is nearly double the price of a dorm for three students without a meal plan, but Boele says on-campus resources and engagement will be the same.
"We are going to create a community out there just like we have created it here. They will have the resources that we have, and we will connect them on campus," said Erin Boele.
An orientation took place for parents who helped move their kids in.
A few spots are still available for students searching for a place to live.
