Unidentified victim found inside burnt home in Fresno County, officials say
LATON, Calif. (KFSN) -- First responders are on the scene of a house fire in Laton where officials have confirmed an unidentified body was discovered inside. The scene is on Gonser Street between Summit Avenue and Murphy Street.
According to authorities, the fire started shortly after 11 a.m., with reports that someone was trapped inside the home.
An RV parked next to the home also caught fire and was destroyed.
Nearby homes were threatened by the fire but there have been no reports of additional damage. Flames also spread to vegetation across the street, which firefighters quickly extinguished.
Firefighters from CAL FIRE, Selma City Fire, Hanford City Fire and Kings County Fire, as well as Fresno County deputies and the California Highway Patrol, all responded to the scene.
Southern California Edison was also called out because of a gas leak caused by the fire.
The American Red Cross is providing assistance to the displaced residents.
The incident remains an active investigation as crews continue searching the property and ensuring there are no remaining hot spots.
Authorities advised the public to avoid the area and to expect road closures for the next five to six hours.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation. The victim has not yet been identified, nor have officials released their cause of death.
