Fresno, Clovis police plan DUI enforcement over holiday weekend

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- Fresno police will launch a DUI saturation effort this holiday weekend, beginning just before Saturday's fireworks celebrations.

"You'll probably see an increase in bicycle officers, traffic safety officers, motorcycles, etc.," Sergeant Todd Turney told Action News.

In Clovis, officers also will conduct DUI patrols. Everywhere, Valley law enforcement agencies are watching for impaired drivers.

"...the weaving, failing to maintain your lane, safe turning movements, speeding or slowing...," Sgt. Turney said about the tell-tale signs.

For many, the holiday weekend also includes the World Cup on Sunday, with England facing Mexico in Mexico City. An outdoor watch party is already planned for Mariposa Mall.

Dozens of people were buying jerseys downtown Friday, including Laura Rodriguez and her grandson.

"We've been looking for jerseys. This morning, we went to three different places," she said. "We're trying to show support for Mexico's soccer team."

Rodriguez plans to watch from home rather than attend the downtown watch party.

"I'm not interested in going anywhere crowded because of alcohol and some people's behavior. Plus, we have (my grandson), so I want a safe environment," she said.

In Fresno County's largest cities, thousands of people have already been arrested for drunk driving this year.

The Clovis Police Department made 202 arrests from January through June. In Fresno, DUI arrests total 1,153.

"Just be safe. Have fun with your celebrations. We want to encourage the celebrations, but be smart and reasonable," Sgt. Turney said.
