Water safety on Fathers Day

REEDLEY, Calif. (KFSN) -- As many people spent Father's Day at local waterways marking the start of summer, authorities are reminding the public to stay safe on the water.

Dozens of people made their way to the Kings River on Sunday, some on boats and others floating downstream.

With the increase in visitors, the Fresno County Sheriff's Office also increased patrols along the river.

Action News rode along with the sheriff's office boating patrol unit, whose primary focus during the busy holiday was ensuring the safety of those on the water.

Deputies traveled miles along the river, checking on floaters and kayakers to make sure they were following safety guidelines.

Officials emphasized the importance of wearing life jackets, avoiding tethering to one another, using a paddle, and staying out of dangerous areas where people could become entangled.

Deputies also monitored for unsafe alcohol consumption.

Deputy Max Simpson with the Fresno County Sheriff's Office urged caution for those drinking near the water.

"If you have had a couple drinks or you're drinking to the point of intoxication, please don't get into the water. If you do get into the water, make sure you can stand up. Don't go out swimming."

Simpson also noted that water levels are higher this year, making it critical for visitors to be aware of current conditions before heading out.

Authorities continue to strongly advise that everyone, including experienced swimmers, wear a life jacket anytime they are in or near the water.
