"Let's Roll": Fresno ceremony remembers Todd Beamer, 9/11 Heroes

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- Communities across Central California gathered Thursday to remember the victims of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks and honor the heroism of those who responded during one of the deadliest days in American history.

What began as a regular Tuesday morning on Sept. 11, 2001, turned into the deadliest attack in America. Thousands of people died in the attacks, and communities across the country continue to mourn their loss while remembering their bravery.

Among those remembered was former Fresno State student Todd Beamer, whose final words, "let's roll," became a lasting symbol of courage. Beamer was honored during Teens That Care's 7th annual 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony at Todd Beamer Park in Northeast Fresno, which brought together people from throughout the community.

Lt. Col. Heather Yamamoto, commander of the 144th Maintenance Group with the California Air National Guard and a Valley native, recalled being at work when she learned of the attacks.

"We provide homeland defense with an alert mission. We were called immediately to help defend the West Coast," Yamamoto said.

At the Clovis Veterans Memorial District, attendees gathered to hear from Michael Montelongo, the former Assistant Secretary to the Air Force. Montelongo was inside the Pentagon when it was attacked on Sept. 11.

"Suddenly the building shook. There was chaos, smoke, sirens," Montelongo said.

More than two decades later, the memories remain vivid.

"We evacuated. When we left the building and moved away from the building. I could see smoke in the air and one of our F-16s circling in the air," Montelongo said.

Speakers and attendees reflected not only on the loss caused by the attacks but also on the bravery displayed by victims, first responders and service members.

"When our moment comes, to make a difference, instead of stepping back, we step up and step in," Montelongo said.

Another Valley resident remembered during the annual observances was Lt. Cmdr. Otis Vince Tolbert, who died inside the Pentagon during the attacks. Tolbert was known for his athletic career at Lemoore High School and later played football at Fresno State. A bench in his honor is located at the Pentagon Memorial.
