Groundbreaking held for long-awaited housing development next to Chukchansi Park

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- After years of planning, officials broke ground on a long-awaited housing development next to Chukchansi Park in Downtown Fresno.

The project, known as the Park at South Stadium Apartments, will include more than 170 housing units in an eight-story building. According to Mayor Jerry Dyer, 70 of those units will be designated as affordable housing.

"We're not just breaking ground on another apartment building. We are breaking ground on the future of downtown Fresno," Dyer said during the groundbreaking ceremony.

City leaders say they hope the development will help attract students and young adults to the heart of the Brewery District and spur additional growth in the area.

"Projects like this create momentum and we know that momentum attracts investment and more investment creates business and more jobs," Dyer said.

The development comes after years of challenges and multiple iterations of the project. District 3 Councilmember Miguel Arias said he was warned against becoming involved with the development when he first took office.

"This is a third version of South Stadium with a third group of developers and a third vision of what it could be, and we finally got it done," Arias said.

The developer also said the project is expected to contribute to downtown Fresno's continued growth.

"Not only a wonderful 8-story building but a very innovative project that is going to have housing, of course, but also programming that is going to be part of the downtown fabric of Fresno," the developer said.

Rent prices have not yet been set. The development is expected to include about 40 parking spaces for residents.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony for the project is expected in 2028.
